johnross is a pittsburgh based artist who works with recycled materials in creating his works. using metal scraps, discarded furniture, industrial machines, broken doors, auto parts, and vintage household appliances, johnross transforms ordinary objects into truly unique pieces of art.

pittsburgh's industrial heritage provides the perfect environment for johnross's work, allowing him easy access to old steel mill sites and industrial scrapyards where he finds many of the pieces and inspirations for his work.

johnross's unique style is the result of years of work at perfecting his trade through experimenting with new techniques, using various chemical interactions with his paints and materials, as well as through studying fine arts at youngstown state university and graduating with a visual communications degree from the art institute of pittsburgh.

hard at work...

the meter room:

the meter room, of which johnross was a co-founder of, along with fellow pittsburgh artist rene dupree, allowed for a community of pittsburgh artists to have an opportunity to display and promotoe their work in the greatest art arena in the world.

this new york gallery displayed a wide variety of art through a collaboratioin of ideas and styles, and offered varied work that extended from welded furniture, sculptures, fine paintings, jewelery, phtography, and large pop art installations.

the meter room recently appeared in the spike lee film, the 25th hour.

the meter room is located on the corner of water and adams st, in brooklyn's d.u.m.b.o. district (down under the manhattan bridge overpass).

...it is literally under the manhattan bridge

the transformation process...

the piece shown below is made from two doors found discarded on pittsburgh's south side. before any cut is made, the final product has already been planned out in detail. each side will have a different color scheme, each with its' own distinct feel. the one side being very vibrant and alive, using purples and yellows, while the second will be much more subdued using more mid-range yellows and greens. this piece is specifically being made as a room divider for display in an east village furniture store.

"each piece is one of a kind, you never know what's going to come out." ...johnross

a jigsaw is used to cut out the design that was previously sketched out for this piece.
after the doors have been cut and sanded, braces are added to enhace the integrity of the doors' structure.
next, a base coat of paint is added for the initial color scheme.
detail and texture is painted in using various techniques for applying multiple layers of different types of paint create a interesting and evocative texture.

once the painting is completed and the paint has dried on both sidses, hardware and trimwork must be added and final touch ups made.
